RORC Transatlantic Race 2018, Day 9: Brothers in arms

Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina played host to the multihull prize giving for the 2018 RORC Transatlantic Race. Giovanni Soldini's Maserati Multi70 was the winner of the Multihull Line Honours Trophy. Peter Cunningham's MOD70 PowerPlay was presented with a RORC decanter as winner of the MOCRA Class after time correction. The two crews had enjoyed a full-on match race across the Atlantic. However, both Maserati and PowerPlay showed mutual respect and friendship, right down to Soldini and Cunningham swapping shirts at the ceremony.

Italian Supermaxi My Song, sailed by International Maxi Association member Pier Luigi Loro Piana has 723 miles to go and is expected to finish the race on Tuesday morning in Grenada. My Song is currently ahead of record pace for the monohull race record and hot favourite for the IMA Trophy for Monohull Line Honours.

Catherine Pourre's Eärendil leads the Class40s from Stephane Bry's French-Finnish Sirius. Henrik Bergesen's Hydra is third, and making up the miles after the pit stop for repairs. "Our friends from Hydra have restarted from Capo Verde. They are 400 miles behind us and we will keep an eye on them, as well as on Sirius which is now almost 300 miles behind," commented Catherine Pourre. "It is getting Sirius!" joked Ari Kaensaekoski on board Class40 Sirius: "Surfing up to 19 knots, wind is steady in the low 20s and the sea state is slowly building towards real Atlantic surfing conditions. We are looking forward to getting those towering waves and downhill rides!"

Pip Hare on board Hydra explained the reason for their pit stop in the Cape Verde Islands and the highs and lows of racing across the Atlantic: "After pushing Hydra as much as possible, trying to match the boat speed of Eärendil, we started to feel some play in the steering system. On further inspection we realised that the aft tiller bearings had broken. We took the difficult decision to turn for the Cape Verdes and so be out of contention for first place, which was tough on morale. With the help of some great friends we managed to organise the parts by satellite phone and pulled off a pit stop Lewis Hamilton would have been chuffed with! New bearings, fresh morale and a belly full of pizza - we are back in the race. We have a new objective, to hunt down second place," continued Hare.

Franco Niggeler's Swiss Cookson 50, Kuka3 was estimated to be leading the fleet after IRC time correction for the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy. Kuka3 had 1,188 miles to go. THE RORC TRANSATLANTIC RACE:

The 2,865 nautical mile race runs through the Canary Islands before crossing the Atlantic to arrive at Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada

Established in 1925, The Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) became famous for the biennial Fastnet Race and the international team event, the Admiral's Cup. It organises an annual series of domestic offshore races from its base in Cowes, such as the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race, as well as inshore regattas including the RORC Easter Challenge

The club is based in St James' Place, London, but after a merger with The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club in Cowes, now boasts a superb clubhouse facility at the entrance to Cowes Harbour and a membership of over 4,000

The International Maxi Association (IMA) represents owners of Maxi yachts worldwide

Recognised in 2010 as the World Sailing international class of Maxi yachts, the IMA has the exclusive right to organise World championships for Maxi yachts. The President of the IMA is Benoît de Froidmont, the Secretary General is Andrew McIrvine, also Admiral of the Royal Ocean Racing Club

The IMA has been closely associated with the RORC Transatlantic Race since its inception. The IMA rule defines and categorises maxi yachts: it aims to embrace all maxi yachts and encourage any development that has a positive effect on the construction and performance of maxi yachts
