J One and Shockwave won today' s Coastal race
Mahon, Menorca, May 29 2015The stunning coast of Menorca and its turquoise waters were the perfect scenario for today’s Coastal Race which started off Mahón. From there the fleet headed to an offset mark, then the Isla del Aire, Cala En Porter and return to Mahón.
Isla del Aire (the Island of the Wind) has for centuries been the best shelter from the Tramontana (Northerly wind) blows in Menorca. This island located in the South East of Menorca is also well known by its emblematic lighthouse.
The Wally 80 J One and George Sakellaris’ Maxi 72 Shockwave won the coastal race in their classes, followed by Tango and Sir Peter Ogden’s Jethou respectively.
The overall scoreboard in the Wally class shows a tie between Open Season, with Jochen Schuemann calling the tactics, and Magic Blue, with Luca Bassani as tactician, with 11 points each. Meanwhile Lyra, with John Cutler, is still showing strong potential in their debut regatta lying just one point behind.
The Maxi 72 class is providing great close competition between the 5 teams competing. At this stage there are three boats (Shockwave, Jethou and Momo) tied on 8 points each; the final result remains wide open .
WALLY CLASS
The Wallys demonstrate the great concept of the class that combines high-tech racing performance with comfortable cruising interiors
The amazing performance given by the 12 Wally boats during today’s coastal race together with the stunning landscape, declared biosphere reserve by the UNESCO, has been one of the highlights of the day.
The smaller boats in the Wally class were the winners of the day. The coastal race saw the 80 footer boats as first and second on the podium (J-One and Tango), followed by the the IMA President Claus-Peter Offen's100 ft. Y3K . The two largest Wallys, Open Season and Magic Carpet 3, were relegated to unexpectedly poor positions opening things up for the final result.
MAXI 72. A COMPACT FLEET WITH A TRIPLE TIE
Today’s race couldn’t have been any tighter. The 5 Maxi 72 boats were fighting feverishly during the 33 mile race course. On corrected time the victory went to George Sakellaris’ Shockwave, followed by Alexander Schaerer’s Caol Ila and Dieter Schoen’s Momo – who took line honours. Less than two minutes separated the entire Maxi 72 fleet after nearly four hours of racing
QUOTES OF THE DAY
Pietro Mantovani, bowman onboard Tango G: “Today it has been a good day for us with very good feelings. We had a good start which pushed us forward and an excellent downwind run. Although the problems we had with the spinnaker retriever helped J One to overtake us. We made a great job with a stable wind from the beginning until the end”.
