Copa del Rey MAPFRE 2014. Less than one month to go.
Palma de Majorca, Spain, 7 July 2014.
From August 2 to 9, the Real Club Náutico de Palma will host the thirty-third edition of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE. Both the RCNP' premises and the bay of Palma will give hospitality to more than a hundred boats - coming from 21 Countries. "We’ve been working on it for the whole year,” explains Jaime Carbonell, manager of the Real Club Náutico de Palma. "As soon as we finish one edition we start working on the next one straight away. It’s without any doubt the biggest event for the Real Club Náutico de Palma."
The Copa del Rey MAPFRE it’s been a success for three decades, defending each year its condition as a reference regatta in the Mediterranean racing season. This year, 116 boats from 21 different nations have already submitted their pre-registration. "Its success is the result of the hard work of an exceptional team, who day by day and year after year work their hearts out for this event," Carbonell says proudly. Around 120 people work hard to guarantee the success both on shore and at sea. "The team is the great cornerstone of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE."
Mini Maxi Alegre - winner of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE 2013 in the class IRC 0 - will be back this year. For Andres Soriano, Alegre’s owner, the appeal of the event is a combination of the atmosphere onshore and the conditions at sea. “It's special because it’s the Copa del Rey!” he reasserts. “It's a combination of factors: on one hand, the bay of Palma, and on the other hand the Real Club Náutico de Palma, which is very welcoming to everyone coming from abroad. The yacht club members open their doors without any restrictions and they consider us as part of their family. And that's unique in the world. Furthermore, I personally know and have a lot of respect for H. M. the King Juan Carlos.”
Maxi yachts Alegre, Jethou, Bella Mente, Robertissima III, Arobas and Shockwave will be racing in the IRC 0 division. IMA members Nilkas Zennstrom and Alberto Roemmers entered with their TPs, and will compete in the IRC 1 division.
