Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Gaastra Palmavela starts tomorrow.

April 30, 2014

After the training and final tuning day, the impressive maxi yachts will open tomorrow the regatta in Majorca, Spain. The "big boat" - Wally and Mini Maxis - will open tomorrow Thursday, May 1st, the Gaastra PalmaVela 2014. Jean Charles Decaux's "J One" will defend the title won last year in the Wally class, while in Mini Maxis, "Jethou" and the new "Rán V" will try and claim the victory they couldn’t win in 2013, where they finished second and third respectively.

The fleet that will start racing tomorrow is made up of 14 boats divided into two classes – Wally and Mini Maxi - and will race two windward-leeward races in the Delta race course, located east of the Bay of Palma.

More than 120 sailors between the two classes will debut tomorrow. Amongst the 14 boats that will sail tomorrow in the Gaastra PalmaVela we will see more than 120 sailors with experience in Olympic sailing, around the world or the America's Cup. The boat with the most Spaniards onboard will be the Wally based in Palma "Galma", which includes among its crew the round the world sailors Antonio "Talpi" Piris and Pablo Iglesias, as well as David Madrazo, Ignasi Triay and Nacho Postigo.

The sailor based in Mallorca, Postigo, said after training today that he sees the Gaastra PalmaVela as more difficult this year, "because there are very good boats but also it looks very interesting, as there are many entries in the class and it will be great fun. We look forward to the start to know where we are, how we work in the maneuvers, etc.”

Bubi Sansó has joined Thomas Bscher’s Wally "Open Season", who also has Ross Macdonald as tactician. Alicia Ageno, from the Canary Islands, will be the only navigator woman in the superyachts, onboard "Kenora".

Onboard “Magic Carpet Cubed" there will be, among others, Jochen Schuemann, Michael Joubert, Marcel van Triest and Guy Salter.

In the Mini Maxi class, Andrés Soriano’s "Alegre" will have in their crew kiwi Andy Meiklejohn and Spanish round the world sailor Antonio Cuervas-Mons as bowman. After today's training, Cuervas-Mons mentioned that their team is "very strong and with all the ingredients to win, if everything goes well of course". But he is also aware that the rivals will not make things easy: "All crews are of a high level so it will not be a piece of cake. “Rán” and “Robertissima III” are very strong.”

Both those teams will debut with their new boats. Swede Niklas Zennstrom will sail on his brand new "Rán V", and its navigator will be British Steve Hayles and Adrian Stead as tactician. Meanwhile, onboard "Robertissima III" the crew will be mostly Italian, like Vasco Vascotto who will compete for the first time with his new boat (former “Rán").

The starting gun: tomorrow at 12:00.
