Rolex Capri Sailing Week/Volcano Race: Race 2: Jethou wins first coastal race
Capri, May 20, 2013Rolex Capri Sailing Week/Volcano Race 2013: Y3K was the first Maxi to cross the finish line in the first day of inshore racing off Capri (Race 2 of four total races during the event). Second to arrive was Caol Ila R (USA) followed by Jethou (GBR), who ultimately won on corrected time.
Tomorrow, Tuesday 21 May, will welcome a second day of inshore racing around the island of Capri (Race 3) while Wednesday marks the start of Race 4, the event’s longest offshore segment, the Rolex Volcano Race (Capri-Aeolian Islands-Capri).
Today the Maxi yachts competing in the 2013 Rolex Capri Sailing Week / Volcano Race completed a 30-nm race which took the boats roundtrip from Capri to Naples. The start was given at 11 AM in conditions that were more favourable for the fleet than expected, with south - south easterly winds of 8-10 knots.
For the first of two days of inshore racing in the waters off Capri (Race 2), the Race Committee elected for a coastal race that brought the fleet around the offset mark (placed 1.5 nm windward of the start line) and then to Naples, with the buoy placed in front of the Castel dell’Ovo.
Alexander Schaerer’s Caol Ila R (USA) was the first to round the mark off Naples, just before 13:00, and finished second on corrected time. Two hours later, at exactly 15:18, it was IMA President Claus-Peter Offen’s Y3K (GER) that arrived first in Capri, followed respectively by Caol Ila R (USA), Jethou (GBR), Wild Joe (HUN), Plis Play (ESP) and Good Job Guys (ITA).
“The race was very close,” said Caol Ila R owner Alexander Schaerer. “We came in second, but we also could have won or come in third. The conditions change from one minute to the next and you can win or lose just before finishing, which is what happened to us. It’s the luck of the draw that decides if you have the right winds.”
The Rolex Capri Sailing Week / Volcano Race 2013 is organized by the IMA (International Maxi Association), together with the Yacht Club Gaeta EVS for Race 1, and the Yacht Club Capri. The Rolex Capri Sailing Week / Volcano Race 2013 marks the official opening of Title Sponsor Rolex’s Mediterranean yachting calendar.
