Indio and Sojana have arrived in Virgin Gorda
December 3, 2011
Indio and Sojana have finished the Transatlantic Superyacht Regatta & Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Cup and now sit in second and third place respectively behind overall leader Hetairos. Andrea Recordati’s Indio (ITA) crossed the finish line, located off the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s new Caribbean base in Virgin Gorda, in second place at 19.35 GMT on 2nd December having completed the crossing from Tenerife in 11 days, 6 hours, 30 minutes and 27 seconds. Peter Harrison’s Sojana (GBR) finished approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes later. The 66 metre Hetairos, which completed the crossing almost three days prior to the Wally 101 Indio, retains the overall lead on corrected IRC time by almost 10 hours.
Marc Fliegner, captain aboard Indio, commented on his arrival in Virgin Gorda: “Of course, everybody is excited to finally get here after quite a challenging crossing over the last 10 days: weather wasn’t what we expected with a low pressure right in the middle of the Atlantic messing up with our plans of early ETA. We also got ‘parked’ 400Nm from the finish for 18 hours, averaging 2knts boat speed. This probably cost us a lot for the finish result, but there isn't much we could have done to avoid that. On the upside, we had some very exciting ‘Caribbean’ downwind sailing with the spinnaker up, boat speed often in the 20 plus knots, exactly how it says in the brochure for an Atlantic crossing!”
“As the only yacht to have competed in every edition of the Maxi Transat, we are pleased to see that the quality and quantity of this year’s fleet should establish the event as a regular fixture in the super yacht calendar.” commented Marc Fitzgerald, captain of Sojana. “Congratulations to the team on Hetairos for creating such a beautiful yacht, and on such an impressive scale. We are of course disappointed to have such a slow finish after leading the race on corrected time for most of the first 2000 miles, but we are looking forward to arriving at the new YCCS clubhouse in Virgin Gorda.”
Tobias Koenig’s Grey Goose of Rorc (GBR) is expected to finish fourth while the Wally 107 Kenora and Croatia’s Karuba 5 and round off the fleet at approximately 250 miles from the finish line at 9.30 a.m. GMT today, 3rd December.
“As Secretary General of the International Maxi Association, I am glad to see such a good participation of IMA members in this regatta. I was very impressed by Hetairos’ performances as well as those from the other boats. I am sure that with the cooperation of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the outstanding YCCS facilities here in Virgin Gorda the regatta will further grow in the next future”, says Gianfranco Alberini, IMA.
