Alegre is the overall winner of the Mapfre Palmavela 2011 in the maxi group

April 24th, Palma de Mallorca

Trofeo Mapfre Palmavela 2011 came to the end today in the bay of Palma after four days of racing in very different wind and weather conditions. Today, Easter Day, in a good northeasterly breeze of 18 to 22 knots, the regatta set up two coastal courses of 14,8 miles for the Maxis and Maxi Wally. With an almost perfect score of five bullets and a second place, Andrés Soriano's Alegre dominantly won the Maxi classification. Irvine Laidlaw’ Highland Flying XI crossed the finish line first, thus being second in the overall scoring, whereas Jethou (GBR) of Sir Peter Odgen was third.

Lauro Buoro’ Inti (ITA) claimed first place in the Maxi Wally class after winning today's coastal race. Second is Claus Peter Offen’ YK3, while Sir Lindsay Owen- Jones Magic Carpet 2 dropped from being second to third. Thomas Bscher’ Open Season could have been second, but a protest won by Magic Carpet 2 pushed her down to sixth place.

The PalmaVela event was run in Palma de Mallorca from April 20 to 24, under the organization of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, Spain. It formally opened the 2011 Mediterranean sailing season for maxi yachts. The event was also part of the IMA 2011 Championship.

The International Maxi Association 2011 calendar continues with the first edition of the Rolex Volcano Race, a 400 miles long-distance race starting from Gaeta bound to Capri (May 24-28). Thirteen maxis already pre-registered.
