The sailing community is in mourning with the passing of Matteo Auguadro

The maxi yachting community suffered a terrible loss on Sunday, when highly experienced and popular Italian bowman Matteo Auguardo, 48, was swept away by an avalanche and killed while mountaineering in the italian Alps. 

From a sailing family, Auguardo was one of the most respected bowmen and was regularly a part of all the professional sailing circuits. This included racing with Mascalzone Latino in the 2007 America's Cup in Valencia. In the RC44 class he sailed with Igor Lah's Team Ceeref, including their RC44 World Championship wins in 2013 and 2016. On the Audi MedCup/52 Super Series he had been bowman on Andres Soriano's Alegre since the 2015 season, but had raced on various 52s since the debut of the class in Europe, winning the first season in 2005 with Vasco Vascotto on Pisco Sour. 

In the maxi world, Auguardo was similarly in demand was a regular on several the top boats including Ran, Cannonball, Momo and  Vesper winning several world championships and editions of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. 

Aside from being an outstanding bowman, Matteo was a highly popular much loved individual who enjoyed life to the full, especially sport and adventure. 

He is survived by his wife, renowned Italian journalist Rachele Vitello and their two daughters.
